Rookies, Rescuers and Dastardly Derailments!

Hi Followers, Friends and Family!

The Grand Adventure had a somewhat sputtering start.  It is the morning of June 3rd, and we're sitting peacefully at breakfast in Verdi NV.  We've had three nights of an average 4 hours sleep.  Over eggs we speculated about where the derailing actually started.  Was it when the. . .?

  • Ford pick-up broke and had to go in the shop to fix a leaky axel seal, so we got seriously behind packing up the house, or
  • The May 31st move was postponed by the moving company to June 1st --- which could have been a good thing if nothing else happened. . . but
  • The movers came with a way too small truck -- they stood around waiting for instructions from the van company – we needed to wait to do the final house cleaning.  Meanwhile. . .
  • "Oh NO, another truck issue!!!  Ray noticed a tire was covered in grease in a different spot from  where the 'fix' was ---Ok folks this truck is less than 6 months old and under warranty—We’re wondering "anyone for lemonade?" Or,
  • The movers cocooned Janice and Mo's vacuum and whisked it away while we were at dinner -- Chuck had to rendezvous with one of them at midnight to retrieve it, or
  • Our first morning in the Sonic on the ranch, and the coffee machine stops grinding.  You coffee addicts out there will appreciate the gravity of 'no coffee’ and also that I had a back-up grinder.  Or,
  • The 8 CF refrigerator in the Sonic didn't work.  Mike came to help (we love Mike!!!!-); Ray made calls and spent much of the day problem solving this issue.  Joanne and I went to get ice cubes, load up the cold bags, throw out much of the food that was in the barn refrigerator waiting to be transferred, or meanwhile. . .
  • Chuck called Ford and our friendly Service Manager squeezed us in.  Then Chuck had to return to the house, to p/u things he forgot, mail packages of things that didn’t get packed and rescue RV cleaning supplies that were given to Mo that should have stayed with us, or
  • In the middle of it all, being told that a party was scheduled right where the RV was parked, we needed to move the trailer --- no truck at that point though!!??? You guessed it:  Mike to the rescue – he hitched us up to his truck and moved us to the new spot!

If you've lost track we were supposed to be off the ranch early June 3, to arrive at our first stop in Verdi, NV that night. . . . say around 6 or so.   Praise God, we got some good news -- the truck was ok – they just forgot to wash the one tire that was under the old leak and then they rotated it. . .  Now continuing. . .

  • Chuck returns we are packing up, hitching up and ready to go (it is roughly about the time we should have been in Nevada, but
  • The pin to secure the trailer hitch is missing???  Missing?  Even mild-mannered Mike --- who of course rescued us Rookies yet again ---- he did say with an avuncular smile: “You lost the hitch pin; how did you do that?"

We did finally get hitched, prayed and got on our way. We left the ranch at about the time we should have arrived in NV.  Mike gave us a hug and said he'd miss us.

We arrived in Verdi, set up, got to bed around 3 or 4.  Over breakfast the next day we speculated about what slowed us down so much.   We traced it back to the truck and then Chuck pointed out. . . "really it was the evacuation, when we didn’t get all those house things done on time;    or maybe it was COVID or the car accidents or . . . .being born??

PS:  Night one and the refrigerator miraculously starts working. . . night two in Elko on a whim, I tried the coffee machine grinder. . . yup....it started working too.   On our way from Elko today to SLC.  Video to follow.

  1. Oh my, a difficult start indeed. I hope things are improving this morning. Keep moving forward and soon the routine will be in place. Until that happens remember there is nothing wrong with a physical to-do list. It's easy to forget and things can seem overwhelming at first. Eyes forward. Where to next?

  2. Okay, so I couldn't select my name . . . HOWEVER, I seem to remember some Christian family guy talking about camping as the great way to build family and memories. You're going to have GREAT family and MEMORIES. Cheering you on and praying at the same time . . . .
